HLT3122 - Certificate III in Basic Health Care

Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of first aid or medical response workers who provide basic healthcare services, including emergency first aid, in both pre-hospital and out-of-hospital environments.

The Certificate III in Basic Health Care equips individuals with the essential skills and knowledge required to deliver fundamental healthcare services across a range of settings. The program covers key areas such as basic anatomy and physiology, infection prevention and control, medical terminology, effective communication, and basic patient care. Delivered through a practical, hands-on approach, the course ensures students gain applied experience and are prepared to meet current industry standards.

This program is designed for existing healthcare workers seeking to formalise, update, or expand their skills. Participants typically work in community care, disability support, or as assistants in nursing within hospitals, residential aged care facilities, or home care environments. The qualification is also suitable for individuals who provide first response services within workplaces such as industrial sites, first aid organisations, and the Australian Defence Force.

Throughout the course, students receive comprehensive support and personalised guidance from experienced industry professionals to help them succeed both academically and professionally. By enrolling in the Certificate III in Basic Health Care, participants strengthen their ability to contribute to improved patient outcomes and meet the evolving demands of the healthcare sector. The Certificate III in Basic Health Care – Existing Workers program is delivered in a practical context, with extensive demonstrations of the knowledge and skills required to formalise and enhance foundational healthcare capabilities, while ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

This qualification is delivered and assessed on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd by Complete Response Solutions Pty Ltd.

This qualification can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

The enrolment period for the HLT31220 Certificate III in Basic Health Care is set at 12 months, providing students with sufficient time to complete all course requirements. Individuals with prior industry experience, relevant qualifications, or substantial practical knowledge may complete the course in a shorter timeframe by
utilising Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer (CT) for applicable units of competency. This flexible approach acknowledges the existing expertise of experienced professionals, enabling them to streamline their learning journey while maintaining the quality and rigour of the program. Adjustments to the
enrolment period are tailored to each student’s background and progress. This flexible enrolment model ensures the qualification accommodates individual circumstances, supports timely completion, and maintains compliance with training standards while preparing students for essential roles in the healthcare industry.

An individual undertaking this qualification with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Satisfactorily complete a language, numeracy and literacy assessment prior to or on course commencement to assess capacity to meet the LLN requirements of this course

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills

  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment

  • Unique Student Identifier USI

Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

There are no pre-requistites of co-requisites for this qualification.

1. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

Practical Assessment

• Perform CPR on an adult, including the use of an AED and placing the casualty into the recovery position
• Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated first aid scenario
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage a casualty experiencing anaphylaxis
• Manage a casualty with asthma
• Manage a choking casualty
• Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
• Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
• Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
• Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
• Manage a casualty with envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bite

Theory Assessment

• A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions

 

2. HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid

Practical Assessment

• Perform CPR on an adult, including the use of an AED and placing the casualty into the recovery position
• Complete a first aid incident report form based on the adult CPR simulated scenario
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage a casualty experiencing anaphylaxis
• Manage a casualty with asthma
• Manage a choking casualty
• Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
• Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
• Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
• Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
• Manage a casualty with envenomation, including snake or funnel-web spider bite
• Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed in a simulated first aid scenario
• Complete a first aid incident report form based on the life-threatening bleed scenario

3. HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy

Practical Assessment

• Perform CPR on an adult, including the use of bag-valve masks, oxygen equipment, an AED, and placing the casualty into the recovery position
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed and administer oxygen
• Maintain resuscitation equipment
