Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of healthcare workers who provide non-emergency transport services to patients requiring clinical care during transit. These professionals deliver essential transport services, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and wellbeing while transferring individuals to and from healthcare facilities in non-emergency situations.

The Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport equips individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform patient transport duties effectively and in accordance with industry standards. The course covers key areas including patient assessment, basic anatomy and physiology, infection prevention and control, medical terminology, and safe manual handling techniques. Delivered through a practical, hands-on approach, the program ensures students gain real-world experience and are well prepared to meet the expectations of the healthcare industry.

This program is suitable for individuals already working in the healthcare sector as well as those seeking to enter the field of patient transport. Upon successful completion of this nationally accredited qualification, graduates can confidently apply for entry-level roles within the private and community sectors, including positions such as Private Hospital Transport Officer, Patient Transport Officer (PTO), Ambulance Attendant, Ambulance Officer, and Community Ambulance Volunteer.

Graduates may gain employment with established non-emergency patient transport providers, hospitals, aged care facilities transporting elderly residents to medical appointments, disability support services assisting individuals in accessing healthcare, and community health organisations focused on improving health and wellbeing. Opportunities also exist within private ambulance services specialising in non-emergency transport, as well as medical transport coordination roles such as dispatchers or coordinators.

Throughout the course, students receive extensive support and personalised guidance from experienced industry professionals to help them succeed academically and professionally. By enrolling in the Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport, students develop the skills required to contribute positively to patient outcomes and meet the growing demands of the healthcare sector. The qualification also provides pathways to further study, including the Certificate IV in Health Care and the Diploma of Emergency Health Care.

This qualification can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider

Expected minimum duration (months): 6 

Expected maximum duration (months) : 12 

As the participant cohort for this program are existing workers who have extensive experience in the industry sector, 450 hours, delivered over a six-month period, has been determined an appropriate time to deliver this Qualification to this existing participant cohort. However, should a new or inexperienced student express an interest in undertaking the Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport, additional time, mentoring, and support may be necessary to ensure successful completion and competency

An individual undertaking this qualification with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Students must hold an open/ unrestricted Australian driver’s license
  • Satisfactorily complete a language, numeracy and literacy assessment prior to or on course commencement to assess capacity to meet the LLN requirements of this course
  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills
  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment
  • Unique Student Identifier USI
  • Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

There are no pre-requistites of co-requisites for this qualification.

After successful completion of the programme students will be awarded a Nationally Recognised Qualification for HLT31120 Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport.

1. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

Practical Assessment

Students must demonstrate competency in the following practical skills:

• Perform CPR on an adult, including the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position
• Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated first aid scenario
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage a casualty experiencing anaphylaxis
• Manage a casualty with asthma
• Manage a choking casualty
• Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, including minor wound cleaning
• Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
• Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
• Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
• Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake or funnel-web spider bite)

Theory Assessment

A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.

 

2. HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid

Practical Assessment

Students must demonstrate competency in the following practical skills:

• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage a casualty experiencing anaphylaxis

• Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation

Students must demonstrate competency in:

• Perform CPR on an adult, including the use of bag-valve masks, oxygen equipment, an AED, and placing the casualty into the recovery position
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed and administer oxygen
• Maintain and check resuscitation equipment
