The BERT project
The Bicycle Emergency Response Team (BERT) is engaged by Complete Response Solutions (CRS) in partnership with our various other medical services to provide medical support at events. BERT is best engaged when large crowds are expected or when an event covers a large geographical area such as marathons. CRS looks at our bike team as a staffing and cost effective alternative for handling requests for event coverage and many locations. The BERT is often incorporated into the Emergency Action Plan and Operational Plan created by Complete Response Solution when planning and managing risk for large events. The BERT can be activated at a moment’s notice for a rapid response in high pedestrian areas. Upon arrival, staff can work in various roles at complex scenes. One benefit of the BERT is they can cover more ground in a short time frame and quickly update our event control centre should further assistance or resources be required. All CRS personnel are certified at the Basic Life Support as well as medication management within the role of Advance Responder.
Each bike within the CRS BERT is fitted with rack packs and saddle bags that provide the needed storage area and support for the medical supplies required at the event. The kits are also easily removed from the bikes to allow for situations where members must leave the bike to provide patient care. The kits are stocked with equipment including but not limited to oxygen, Life Pak 1000 AED, IV and airway supplies, and medications. Each team member also carries a medical vest of supplies that are commonly needed at large gatherings such as bandages, as well as band-aids, alcohol preps, etc.
The equipment contained within each kit is light enough to carry, but in-depth enough to sustain patient care until a CRS transport unit arrives on the scene.
